A liver enzyme that rises when liver cells are irritated.
What it measures
The concentration of alanine aminotransferase, an enzyme found mainly inside liver cells. When those cells are injured or inflamed, the enzyme leaks into the bloodstream.
Why a doctor orders it
Part of a comprehensive metabolic panel, checked when liver involvement is being considered, and monitored during medications known to affect the liver.
What is generally associated with a higher result
Broadly associated with fatty liver, alcohol, viral hepatitis, a number of medications and supplements, and recent strenuous exercise. Mild elevations are common and are usually investigated by repeating the test rather than acting immediately.
What is generally associated with a lower result
Low values are common and generally not pursued.

Not every shift in a value reflects disease. These are ordinary factors known to affect this particular measurement:
- Strenuous exercise in the days before the draw
- Alcohol
- Over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements
- Body weight
