What it measures
The average size of the platelets circulating in the blood. Platelets are small cell fragments made in the bone marrow that plug damaged blood vessels, and newly made platelets tend to be larger than older ones.
Why a doctor orders it
It is reported automatically alongside the platelet count on most complete blood counts. Clinicians mainly use it as supporting context for an abnormal platelet count, since larger platelets can suggest the marrow is producing them quickly.
What is generally associated with a higher result
Broadly associated with faster platelet turnover - situations where platelets are being used up or cleared and the marrow is releasing young, large replacements. It is also seen with some inherited platelet traits and tends to run somewhat higher in smokers.
What is generally associated with a lower result
Broadly associated with reduced platelet production in the bone marrow. On its own, with a normal platelet count, a low value is generally not pursued.
Everyday things that move this number
Not every shift in a value reflects disease. These are ordinary factors known to affect this particular measurement:
- How long the sample sat before analysis - platelets swell in the collection tube over time
- The anticoagulant used in the collection tube
- Recent vigorous exercise
- Smoking
