Triglycerides
The main form of fat circulating in blood.
What it measures
The concentration of triglycerides, the most common type of fat in the body and the form in which most dietary fat travels.
Why a doctor orders it
Part of a standard lipid panel; also relevant to pancreatic and metabolic assessment.
What is generally associated with a higher result
Broadly associated with recent eating, alcohol, obesity, poorly controlled diabetes, thyroid underactivity, kidney conditions, and several medications. This value is the most food-sensitive on the lipid panel.
What is generally associated with a lower result
Low values are generally not pursued.
Everyday things that move this number
Not every shift in a value reflects disease. These are ordinary factors known to affect this particular measurement:
- Eating before the draw - this one genuinely needs fasting to interpret
- Alcohol in the preceding days
- Recent weight change
Questions to take to your appointment
- Did I fast long enough for this to be meaningful?
